Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, is often described as the city where tradition meets modernity. You might have even heard it being called – The City of Brown Roofs well trust me, it is. While it might not have the bustling pace of Lagos or the coastal allure of Port Harcourt, Ibadan is a treasure trove of history, culture, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or looking to unwind, Ibadan has something special for you. Maybe you are like me who loves to go sightseeing or hang out with friends every chance you get well I’ve got some great news for you Ibadan has some Hot spots to chill.   1. The Historic University of Ibadan

When you think of Ibadan, one of the first places that comes to mind is the University of Ibadan. Well if I’m being truthful, I am writing about this place firstly because I am an alumnus of the prestigious university. Nigeria’s premier university is not just an academic institution but also a beautiful space filled with beautiful modern and historic sites. The university’s history is etched in every building and pathway, making it a perfect blend of education and exploration

Places to visit within the University of Ibadan;

University of Ibadan Botanical Garden: The University Of Ibadan Botanical Garden is a place where you can have a nice family picnic, reunion with old friends or even a spiritual meditation or retreat. The last time my colleagues from work and I visited the garden which was a couple of months back, we had so much fun with card games, dance competitions, Karaoke and of course my favourite eating and drinking. If you are also the type who isn’t into games much you can take a leisure stroll through the botanical gardens, where the serenity of nature embraces you. The entry fee is #200 per head. You should book ahead as the reservations might be filled up if you just show up without booking first. The botanical garden also opens up every day of the week including Sundays.

University of Ibadan Zoological Garden: The University of Ibadan Zoological Garden popularly called UI Zoo is a place to visit for a close-up experience with wildlife. The zoo is found within the premises of the institution. As an undergraduate student some years back, I visited the UI zoo and had a wonderful time. The highlight was looking at the lions and feeding the Giraffe called Ajoke.  If you are a lover of wildlife and don’t have the wherewithal or time to travel to places like Kenya, South Africa or Zambia don’t worry, the University of Ibadan Zoo has got what you need. From the fearsome Nile crocodile to the gentle giraffe to the scary-looking hyenas to the dark snake pits and of course, the majestic Lion’s den, the University of Ibadan zoo has got it all. The entry fee is #500 per head. You don’t need to book ahead before visiting the zoo.

Wole Soyinka Art Theatre: The Wole Soyinka Art Theatre at the University of Ibadan is a true treasure haven of Nigerian culture. Named after the famous playwright, it’s a place where local art comes to life through gripping drama and vibrant music.
